The Uttar Pradesh Police said on Thursday that the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against the mafia in the state, after a special task force of the state police shot down gangster Asad, mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son in an encounter in Jhansi.

“The government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against the mafia. The result of this policy is before everyone today,” news agency ANI reported quoting Prashant Kumar, Special Director General, Law & Order.

The Special DG also revealed that they had received an information about a possible attack on the police convoy bringing the accused Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf to the state.

“In view of this information, teams of civil police and special forces were deployed,” he added.

Atiq Ahmad’s son Asad and an accomplice, both sought in the Umesh Pal murder case, were killed in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday near Jhansi.

“Asad and Ghulam were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj and were carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. They were killed in an encounter with an UP STF team,” said Special Director General Kumar.

Additional Director General of Police Amitabh Yash told that Asad and Ghulam also possessed sophisticated foreign-made weapons.

The encounter unfolded on the same day Ahmed appeared before the Prayagraj Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in the murder case and was sentenced to 14 days in judicial custody.

At the scene of the encounter, two bodies were seen laying by a motorbike. They were later taken away in an ambulance.

According to STF officials, Asad and Ghulam have been on the run since the February 24, the day of the murder of Umesh Pal.

They were attempting to flee on a motorbike when they were detained by an STF squad in Jhansi on Thursday. Asad and Ghulam opened fire on the personnel and were killed in retaliatory response.

On February 24, Umesh Pal, a crucial witness in the 2005 murder of then-BSP Lawmaker Raju Pal, and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj district.

His wife, Jaya Pal, filed a lawsuit against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, Asad, Ghulam, and others on February 25.
